UNIQUETURNING
I have found this emblem & will attempt to create a hopefully interesting
Woodturning based on this theme-maybe a Winged Ball with the car
emblem. If you want to skip the Steps & see the
result-scroll to bottom of page.
Step 1.
I have a piece of Home-grown dry Cherry 6" x 6" x 3" mounted on the faceplate
(Cherry is ok for carving)
Rough down to around 5", put a dovetail in which will be the back of the piece.
Step 2.
Cherry reversed & held in dovetail.
Step 3.
Front shaped to approx size-note that the 'rim' has to be cut partly away to
form the 'wings'.
Step 4.
Starting to get the idea? Rough lettering on paper offered to the piece to see
if dimensions are about right.
Step 5 .
Decided to use dimensions of logo ( smaller than original template )
to give better width to 'wings'. Tracing paper used to transfer the writing
& horizontal stripes. Writing cut with a Dremel with a cone shaped cutter.
This is the tricky part & difficult to get looking right.
Step 6.
Drilled out outline proud of final shape
Step 7.
Waste removed, next to clean up edges & refine lettering & wing 'indents'.
Step 8 .
Reasonably happy
with result ( memo-must practise carving! ). Piece returned to chuck.
Step 9.
Stub formed
carefully remembering to keep fingers out of the way of the 'flying wings' &
piece removed from chuck.
Step 10.
Pago pago wood ( bit like wenge ) formed to produce gear knob & stick, note base
offset to better represent look of gearlever & sleave.
Step 11..Wings
on gear stick. Base left to do. Have a piece of cherry waiting.
Step 12.
Cherry approx 7" x 7" x 2" attached to faceplate ( top to faceplate ) &
dovetail formed to take the scroll chuck.
Base fashioned to my impression of a car tyre, sanded & friction polished.
Step 13.
Cherry reversed & attached to scroll chuck. Tyre effect formed, hole for
gear stick, sanded, sealed & friction polished.
Step 14.
All glued together picking best aspect of each piece to optimise the overall
effect.
Finished!
Reasonably happy-lettering could be improved-short grain on base rim was always going to be a nuisance to get a good finish.
About 15 hours work.
